Colorado Springs, Colorado is approximately 70 miles south of Denver at the eastern edge of the Rocky Mountains. The city is located at the base of Pikes Peak. Parts of the city are over a mile above sea level. It is the county seat of El Paso County. The estimated population of the city was approximately 414,000 in 2009.

The climate is dry and there are over 250 days of sunshine per year. The average high temperatures range from 28 degrees in January to 84 degrees in July. The temperature may drop down to 14 or 15 degrees during December and January.

The biggest employers in the city are the high tech industry, the United States Air Force Academy and the United States Space Command. Three of the major industries in Colorado Springs are tourism, education and manufacturing. Downtown Colorado Springs is a small geographical area with many shops and restaurants. One of the city’s malls, The Citadel, is in the center of the city. This mall has two department stores, smaller stores and restaurants. Chapel Hills Mall has over 155 stores. There are six department stores in this mall. Museums in the city include the Colorado Springs Pioneers Museum, the Ghost Town Museum and the Western Museum of Mining and Industry.

Colorado Springs has schools, shopping centers, parks and churches of many denominations.
